How it works

Live on your site in three steps.

Clients never handle video files. PitoReel issues a key for your website, you paste the code it sends, and the player does the rest.

Request a client key

Tell us your website domain(s), the titles you want to show and how you want to use them. PitoReel creates the key and approves your domain.

Paste the code

We send you the finished embed code with your key and title filled in. Paste it into an HTML or Custom HTML block on your page.

Publish

Publish the page on your approved domain and press play. Updates to the player reach your page automatically.

Access modes

One player, four ways to use it.

Each key is issued in one mode, agreed with you when the key is created. Viewers never need an account to watch.

Trailer / promo

The trailer or preview only, ending with an invitation to watch the full film on PitoReel. For press, festival and marketing pages.

Free

Full playback of free Creative Director content. A catalog title on a free key plays its trailer.

Pay-per-view By arrangement

The trailer, then an offer to buy the full film. The viewer pays by card in a secure PitoReel checkout window, with no account. An emailed link is their receipt and their way back. Enabled by PitoReel.

Licensed

The full film, free to your viewers, on your approved domain(s) only, under a license agreement with PitoReel.

A key with no approved domain plays nowhere.
Pay-per-view and licensed keys list the exact titles they may show.
A key can carry an end date and can be switched off instantly.
Branding — your logo beside ours, an accent color, hiding the PitoReel mark or the “More on PitoReel” link, muted autoplay and loop — is set by PitoReel when your key is issued. Ask for it in your key request.

The code PitoReel sends you is ready to paste. These templates show its exact shape: replace YOUR_CLIENT_KEY with your client key and TITLE_ID with the title id we send you.

Where to paste it. Any place on your page that accepts raw HTML: an HTML, Custom HTML or Code block in your site builder, or the page template itself. Use the responsive form when the player sits in a column that changes width.

Keep the attributes as supplied. Do not add a sandbox attribute, and do not remove allow or allowfullscreen. The player needs scripts, full screen and, for pay-per-view, a secure payment window.

Site builders. Some builders place custom HTML inside their own frame on a different domain. If the player says it is not authorized although your domain is approved, contact PitoReel and tell us which builder you use.

Requirements

What your website needs.

Very little. There is nothing to install and nothing to keep up to date.

HTTPS

Serve the page over HTTPS.

An approved domain

Keys are locked to the domains PitoReel approved, subdomains included. Test on the real website, not a file on your computer or a preview address.

A current browser

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on desktop and on phones and tablets. JavaScript enabled.

Content-Security-PolicyOnly if your site already sends one: add PitoReel to frame-src

Security and data

Protected where it matters. Honest about the limits.

The full detail is in the Technical Specification. In short:

What protects the content

Domain-locked keys. The browser is told which websites may show the player, and PitoReel checks the page it is on before every playback.
Five-minute playback tokens. Signed by PitoReel and renewed automatically while someone watches, so a copied video address stops working.
Card details never reach you or us. Pay-per-view payments are taken by Stripe, and access is granted only after PitoReel confirms the payment with Stripe.
No viewer names in playback data. PitoReel counts loads, plays and purchases per key, and provides reports on request. See our privacy policy.

What it does not do

It stops link sharing and hotlinking. It does not prevent screen recording.
There is no DRM in version 1.0.
There is no client login or self-serve dashboard. Keys and reports are handled by PitoReel.

Troubleshooting

If the player does not play.

The player never shows a blank box without a reason. Find what you see below.

The player area is blank, or the browser says pitoreel.com refused to connect

Why: The page’s domain is not on your key’s allowlist, so the browser will not show the player there.
Fix: Ask PitoReel to add the exact domain the page is on.

“Not authorised on this website”

Why: Same cause, reported by the player. The message names the domain it saw.
Fix: Send PitoReel that domain.

“This embed has expired”

Why: Your key has reached its end date.
Fix: Contact PitoReel to renew it. Your page does not need to change.

Nothing appears and your site sends a Content-Security-Policy

Why: Your policy is blocking the frame.
Fix: Add https://pitoreel.com to frame-src, as shown in Requirements.

It works on one address but not another

Why: Keys are locked to approved domains. A preview, staging or local address is a different domain.
Fix: Test on the approved domain, or ask PitoReel to add the other address.

“This player is not configured” or “Cannot play this title”

Why: The code lost its key or title id when pasted, or the key does not exist or has been switched off. The line under the message says which.
Fix: Copy the code again and paste it unchanged, or contact PitoReel.

It says it is not authorized, inside a site builder

Why: Some builders wrap custom HTML in their own frame on another domain, and that domain is what the player sees.
Fix: Contact PitoReel with the builder’s name and the domain the player names.

Full screen does not work

Why: The allow or allowfullscreen attribute was removed, or a sandbox attribute was added.
Fix: Use the code exactly as supplied.
